Straybits: The Original Rare Cryptopunk Monopolist

Straybits is somewhat of a legend among the Cryptopunks community thanks to his decision to sell his incredibly rare portfolio. After building an Ethereum portfolio he began investigating smart contracts and projects to participate in. During that time he came across a Mashable article about Cryptopunks. He checked out the project and found the majority of the rare types to be still available.

This included the now infamous 7804 punk owned by Peruggia who acquired it from the founder of Figma for a mere $4.2 million.

As he travelled the world following a tough breakup, Straybits decided to sell his first punk and subsequently offloaded most of the remaining rare punks. In hindsight this appears to have been a costly decision as the combined value of that portfolio would now theoretically be over $50 million if not more.

That said, the market for Cryptopunks may not exist today if it weren’t for Straybits. He, combined with Snowfro, basically made it possible for the marketplace of rare punks to exist. In this interview we discussed his handling of his punks as well as his present take on the world of punks and more.
